Medicines have benefits and some have risks. Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist or you have side effects see your health professional. Brands and generics both contain the same active ingredient(s) and are medically equivalent. Some brands are marketed under different names by the same manufacturer depending on the country of origin. Images are provided as a reference only, the received medicine may vary in packaging, color, pill shape, etc, from one batch to the next. For an item marked "generic" any quality brand may be sent, however you will always receive the active ingredients ordered in the strength(s) ordered.
Rhinocort (budesonide) is a corticosteroid nasal spray used to combat allergy symptoms. Though the active ingredient may be used to treat asthma and other conditions, in nasal spray form it is only effective at managing symptoms in the nasal passages and sinuses.
It's possible to buy Rhinocort as both a brand name and generic; generic versions are typically about half the cost of the brand name product. A prescription is not required to buy Rhinocort or generic budesonide nasal sprays in most areas.
The nasal spray is safe for use in patients aged 6 and up; do not administer this medication to children under 6 without explicit doctor approval.
Is Rhinocort Right for You?
Allergy sufferers buy Rhinocort to manage both seasonal and perennial, indoor and outdoor allergy symptoms in the nasal passages, including:
Note that Rhinocort is designed to provide relatively long-term relief from allergy symptoms; it is not a fast-acting medication. If treatment starts in advance of allergen exposure symptoms often do not develop at all, but if treatment begins after allergy symptoms are already present it may take 1 to 2 days before significant relief is experienced, and maximum benefits may not be felt for up to a week.
While the medication may be relatively slow in treating existing symptoms, it generally provides superior relief compared to fast-acting products once treatment is underway.
As a corticosteroid, Rhinocort works by inhibiting the immune system's response to allergens. This effect builds up with time and regular use of the medication. Because it is a nasal spray, applied directly the nasal passages, Rhinocort has minimal risk of side effects compared to taking corticosteroids via tablet, injection or other methods that deliver the medication systemically.
Treatment Overview
Treatment is similar whether Rhinocort is being used to prevent symptoms or alleviate existing symptoms; the medication is typically administered once or twice per day via one or two sprays in each nostril.
As a general rule treatment starts with lower doses, such as one spray per nostril once per day, to be increased only if needed. For existing symptoms treatment may begin at any time; to prevent symptoms from developing treatment should ideally start 2 weeks prior to anticipated allergen exposure.
For best results speak with a doctor or pharmacist about recommended dosage, and use the medication at the same time each day to maximize presence of the medication in the nasal passages.
It's important to note that both brand-name Rhinocort and generic budesonide nasal sprays are available in different strengths, typically ranging from 32 mcg per spray to 55 mcg per spray. Be sure to double-check the strength of the product before purchasing to prevent over- or under-dosing. While using higher doses is unlikely to cause harm in adults, it does present greater risk of side effects in children under age 12.
In most cases treatment can continue as long as needed provided no negative side effects develop.
Before you Buy Rhinocort
While most allergy sufferers can use Rhinocort without any problems developing, there are some situations in which it should be used with caution or not at all.
Check with a doctor before using Rhinocort or budesonide if:
Do not use or stop use until speaking with a doctor if:
Because Rhinocort may inhibit healing, it's important to notify doctors that the medication is being taken before any surgical procedures are performed on the nose, eyes, mouth or throat. Treatment will most likely need to stop for a week or two prior to surgery.
